How to Get Your First 1000 Email Subscribers from Your Website
In today’s video, I want to share with you how to get your first 1000 email subscribers from your website. My email list is the number one place where I make money in my online business, so that’s why I want to share this with you. Also, the majority of people who come to your website are not going to be ready to purchase on the first visit, so that is why it’s so important that we convert them into email subscribers.
If you’re new here, I’m Louise of Louisehenry.com (formerly Solopreneursidekick). I put out new videos every single week, all about making the tech in your online business easier, so if that is something you could use some help with, definitely hit Subscribe down below, and hit that little Bell icon as well so that you get notified every time I post a new video.
Give People A Reason to Sign Up
The first thing that you need to do is give people a reason to sign up for your email list. You’ll see a lot of people that just say, Sign up for my Newsletter. I think get rid of that entirely – nobody wants to sign up for a generic newsletter. Instead, you want to come up with a “freebie” – you’ll see this called a freebie, an opt-in, a lead magnet – all referring to the same type of thing. Basically, what it is, is something really valuable that you can give away to your ideal client – something they would absolutely love to receive - and you are going to give it away completely free in exchange for their email. That’s the first thing that you need to come up with. You’ll see people do checklists, templates – I do a free trial of my online course. There are so many different things that you can do, so have fun with this and get creative. Think of something they would love and also that leads into whatever your paid service is.
Add Sign-Up Forms
Next, we need to add sign-up forms for this freebie everywhere – literally this thing is going everywhere on your website. This can be in your footer, in your blog sidebar. I would love to see it in your header somewhere, so that people are seeing it even if they scroll down the page. There are a few different ways that you can do this. If you are using Squarespace, you could simply add the Announcement Bar feature, or you can do what I’ve done here, and add a button and then make it fixed, so that it is visible, even when people scroll down the page. Pretty much add these everywhere. You’ll see that I have them in my blog posts, on my About page – I’ve really just put it on as many pages as I could – wherever it makes sense - because this is one of my number one goals of my website.
Create a Dedicated Landing Page
The next thing that I would recommend you do is create a dedicated landing page for your freebie. This is a page where the only option is to sign-up for that freebie. You’ll see on this page here that I’ve cut away the header and the footer, and the one option is for people to sign-up for a free trial of my course. This is going to be really great for you, especially when you are sharing this out with potential clients. You’re sending them to one page, with one option, and then you can follow up with them after.
Add a Pop-Up
The next thing that you can do is add a pop-up sign-up form to your website. I know what you might be thinking – you might hate pop-ups and think they’re terrible – but I think that there are just some websites out there that are doing this all wrong. I think you can do it in a really nice, effective way, that isn’t too obtrusive. I think a few websites are doing that, but you can do it in an effective way. I think one of the keys here is just not showing it to the same person repeatedly - just show them once per visit. You can use tools like Squarespace or ConvertKit for this, and it’s not going to show every two seconds on every page.
Drive Traffic to Your Website
So, we’ve cut the boring, standard newsletter. We’ve created a really enticing freebie, added it everywhere on your website, created a landing page, and created a pop-up – these are all really going to help you hit that first 1000 subscribers – but finally, the most important part is that you actually drive traffic to your newly-optimized website.
When I first started, I made this mistake and I just expected everyone to find me somehow, even though I was doing absolutely nothing for them to be able to find me. So, you have to be driving traffic in some way, whether you want to blog with the correct SEO strategies or use social media, you have to be doing something to drive traffic.
If you’re short on time, and you’re not going to be creating content, then you are going to have to go with paid ads. Either way – don’t do what I did and just do nothing in order to get traffic to your website. You have to get traffic first, and then a certain amount of those people are going to convert into email subscribers, which is great, because then you have a dedicated audience of people who are interested in whatever it is that you do, and eventually these people are going to convert into sales.
