I used to feel like I had to wake up, jump straight into work, and hustle as much as possible to be productive. But one of the biggest advantages of running your own business is the ability to design your life and business your way. So I decided to be more intentional โ€“ and realized that what Iโ€™m really going for is peaceful productivity.

Here are eight simple habits that have helped me make each day both enjoyable and productive.

1. Get 8 Hours of Sleep

If I donโ€™t get a full 8 hours, I end up dragging through the day and everything takes longer.

To wake up at 6 a.m. โ€“ when the temperature in Panama is perfect and I can watch the sunrise โ€“ I have to be getting ready for bed at 8:30 and winding down by 9 p.m.

At first, this felt so early, but without it, I donโ€™t get the rest I need. And honestly? Getting woken up at 6 a.m. every day by my dog Charlie kissing me on the nose is a pretty adorable alarm clock. ๐Ÿถ

2. Do Something You Love First (and Set the Vibe)

Before I dive into work, I do something I enjoy โ€“ and I use music to set the tone for the day.

Every morning, my husband Nathan makes me coffee and puts on music, so I wake up to a good vibe right away.

If youโ€™ve been wanting to get up earlier but find it hard, try putting on music first thing. It instantly makes the morning feel better.

3. Get Outside First Thing

Almost every health expert Iโ€™ve listened to recommends it: get outside as soon as you can after waking up.

For me, that means grabbing my coffee with Nathan, sitting on the wall to chat about life, then walking Charlie.

Itโ€™s a slow, enjoyable start to the day โ€“ and it reinforces my theme of prioritizing life before work.

4. Plan the Day with Asana

Iโ€™ve been using Asana for years to keep me organized and on track.

Each morning, I check my weekly goals (stored on my Sunday tab) and choose:

  • 1โ€“3 big things I want to focus on

  • A few small tasks (like replying to an email)

I originally learned this from Tim Ferriss: pick three things that, if thatโ€™s all you got done, would still make the day a success.

As an entrepreneur, thereโ€™s always more you could do โ€“ so decide in advance what will be โ€œenoughโ€ for the day.

5. Get Dressed (Even When Working from Home)

Itโ€™s tempting to roll out of bed and start working in pajamas, but Iโ€™ve noticed the more put-together I feel, the better my day goes.

Plus, Iโ€™m more likely to hop on camera for stories or say yes to a last-minute lunch date when Iโ€™m already dressed and feeling good.

6. Start the Day at Your Desk

I spend the first few hours of my workday at my desk before moving to the couch in the afternoon.

While the couch is cozy, Iโ€™m definitely more focused and productive at my desk โ€“ even if itโ€™s just for the morning stretch.

7. Eat Enough Protein

Earlier this year, I noticed I was struggling with low energy โ€“ and it turned out I wasnโ€™t eating enough protein.

With some help from friends, I started eating protein at every meal, and the difference in my energy levels has been huge.

A typical meal now: salmon, rice, and veggies. Taking the time to prepare protein-rich meals has been a game-changer.

8. Have a Clear Work Cutoff

As an entrepreneur, thereโ€™s always more you could do. But Iโ€™ve learned to set a general cutoff time and feel proud of myself no matter what got done.

These days, I can shut my laptop, feed Charlie, take him for another walk, and unwind with a good show โ€“ without thinking about work.
