Lately, so many of my business friends and students have been telling me how frustrated they feel trying to grow their business with Instagram. And honestly? I get it. It can feel like you’re stuck on a never-ending content hamster wheel - constantly creating stories, reels, posts, and carousels, only for them to disappear within 24-48 hours. It’s exhausting, especially when you’re trying to run your business at the same time.
That’s why today, I want to share another option - a platform that’s given me more freedom, more traction, and way more long-term payoff: YouTube.
If you’ve been thinking about starting a YouTube channel, this post is for you. I’ll share why YouTube has become my core focus, how to keep things simple, and what I recommend if you actually want to grow your business with it.
Why YouTube Is a Better Strategy
I’m a huge fan of strategies that are leveraged and long-lasting - and that’s exactly what YouTube is.
Rather than posting non-stop content and chasing trends or a constantly changing algorithm, you can put your time and energy into long-form, evergreen videos. One quality YouTube video can bring in new leads and sales for months - even years - after you hit publish.
For example, I have a video I posted over a year ago that’s still bringing in leads and sales today.
Instead of scrambling to create content every day, all you have to focus on is one quality video per week. That’s it.
When I made that switch, everything felt lighter, more manageable, and honestly, more fun. I could put real thought into what I was creating and know my content would keep working for me long after I made it.
YouTube also creates a library of your expertise that people can discover and dive into at any time.
What You Need to Get Started (Gear + Tools)
Getting started on YouTube doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
You can start with:
Your iPhone - The camera is amazing and looks fantastic.
A simple webcam - I used one for years alongside a microphone, and it worked great for growing my business.
The most important thing? Sound quality. Invest in a good microphone - it makes a huge difference.
I’ve put together a free YouTube Kickstart Guide with links to all the gear and tools I recommend, plus extra resources.
For editing, I use Descript. It’s one of my favorite tools ever because you can edit your video like it’s a document. I’ve made videos showing exactly how to use it, and I’ll link those in the guide too.
Let Go of Perfection
The key to starting is… well, starting.
Don’t hold yourself back by aiming for perfection - imperfect videos that are posted will always be more valuable than perfect videos sitting on your hard drive.
When I first started, I didn’t worry about how perfect my videos were or how many views they got. I just posted, practiced, and improved in public. If you scroll back on my channel, you can see how far I’ve come - my backgrounds, delivery, and editing style have all improved over time.
Now that I’m back on YouTube, my motto is 1% better each time. Small tweaks to each video compound over time and lead to massive improvements.
How to Get Discovered as a Small Channel
If you’re just starting out, focus on answering specific questions your audience has.
That’s exactly how I started - making short, specific videos that solved real problems for my audience. This approach helped me get discovered early on, and I still use it today.
For example, if you search “how to use Kartra” in a guest window on YouTube, my video shows up in the #1 spot. That’s the power of YouTube SEO - and yes, I still find it valuable for discovery.
Once you have those “search” videos, you can add trendier videos that are more likely to get picked up by YouTube’s home feed.
To find searchable topics, I use a tool called Keywords Everywhere every single week when planning my videos. It shows me exactly what people are typing into YouTube.
Make Money on YouTube (Even With a Small Audience)
You don’t need to go viral or rely on ad revenue to make money on YouTube.
Instead, focus on having your own products - whether that’s a course, a service, or a membership.
By creating targeted videos that help your audience solve a problem or achieve a transformation, you can make sales even with a small audience. Your YouTube channel becomes a consistent lead generation tool for your business.
The key is to move people off YouTube and onto your email list, where you can share offers with them.
Because YouTube content is long-lasting, building this library of expertise will keep bringing in traffic and leads for years.
