How to Be Comfortable on Camera

In today’s video, I wanted to talk about how to be comfortable on camera. Maybe you’re just getting started creating videos, and you’re like “How on earth do I actually get comfortable with this and feel like my true self when the camera turns on?”

Well, I think I have a few really good tips for you today that are going to help. I’ve been on YouTube for a few years now, and while I’m definitely not perfect on-camera here, I feel as though I’ve come a long way.

Actually, I thought it would be super fun to look at the very first video that I posted on YouTube, so that’s what we’re going to kick things off with.

“Hi everybody. My name is Louise, and my business is Solopreneursidekick, and I provide on-demand design and digital marketing for busy solopreneurs. Today, I’m going to be showing you how to use Canva, which is an amazing, free, easy-to-use graphic design platform. Then I’m going to be teaching you my three biggest design tips and some easy hacks to make your images look more professional…

Ok – I look kind of nervous honestly, lol! As you can see, things have definitely changed since then, and I am a lot more comfortable on camera than when I first started.

I can’t wait to dive into the tips, but first, if you are new here, hi, I’m Louise of Louisehenry.com. Here on this channel, I talk all about online business and, right now, I’m doing a series about creating content, so if those are topics you’re interested in, definitely hit Subscribe down below.

Outline Your Key Points

My first tip for you to get comfortable on camera is to outline what you want to say ahead of time, rather than script it. When I first got started, I thought it was a great idea to write out every single sentence that I wanted to say. That resulted in kind of a robotic delivery and it didn’t quite work. So, then, I realized, it’s much better if you just outline your key points. (I literally have it right in front of me and all it says is “Outline what you want to say, don’t script.” So, that is my sentence that I started with, and then you can just talk, and it will come across a lot more natural.

Talk To Your BFF

The next one is to talk to the camera like it’s your BFF. I will literally imagine one of my best friends on the other end and try to talk as I would with them, because you’re most comfortable with your BFF’s – that’s when you’re acting like your true self. I like to pretend they’re on the other end, and it makes things a lot easier - it feels like you’re connecting with one person, rather than maybe feeling the pressure that a lot of people will see this video.

Take Action

The next tip for you is to know that improvement comes from action. I can be so guilty when I need to do something new - I’m watching videos on it, reading articles about it - but the actual improvement comes from action. You have to get out the camera, turn it on and start practicing – that’s the only way that you are truly going to get better and become more comfortable with this.

The other thing I want to emphasize is that you are going to get so much better. You can be confident knowing that how you start is literally just your starting point, and you are going to evolve and get so much more comfortable on camera. I feel like the goal is really for us to be as much of ourselves and as natural as possible, which brings me to the next point.

Be Your True Self

You might be looking at successful YouTubers right now and thinking, “I need to be energetic like them,” or “I need to be funny like them.” I can tell you that I have seen all different personality types be successful on YouTube, so don’t feel like you have to copy or mimic the way someone else is. We are all going to appreciate when you show up online, as you.

Those are my tips for getting more comfortable on camera. Remember, the most important thing is that you get started - and we are all going to get better as we go. I know that I’m going to look back on this video in a year, and be like, oh my gosh, she was so awkward… but that’s fine. All I know is that I’m showing up and doing the best I can right now – and the same goes for you.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day. If you liked this video, let me know by giving it a thumbs up. Don’t forget to hit Subscribe for more short and sweet videos like this, and I’ll see you soon with another video.
