How to Build Your Brand as a Freelancer
Building a brand as a freelancer is going to help your business so much because it's going to help you stand out and get more clients. The biggest benefit as a freelancer is that you can just be yourself and that's your brand. It's going to be unique because there's only one of you. However, it's not so simple and we over-complicate it and feel really uneasy about what that looks like in practice.
In this video I'm going to walk you through a few key points to think about so that your brand is well defined.
1. What Makes You Different?
The first thing that you should think about is what makes you different - your personality, your style, and the angle on the service that you offer.
2. Your Underlying Driving Force
Next, think about your underlying driving force. Why do you do it this way? For example, if you have a more high-end service, that's because you value quality and experience versus someone who values affordability the most.
3. Know Your Customer
The third point is know your customer really, really well: who they are, how they talk about their problems and why they're going to choose you over everybody else who does the same thing.
4. Define Your Brand Voice
A huge part of branding is defining your brand voice. This is going to be one of the key ways that your personality will come across online.
Your brand voice includes the following:
It's your tone on your about page.
It's the language that you use. Is it casual or formal?
It's the way that you sign off your emails - are you writing "cheers" or something more formal like "warm regards."
It's what you say in all of your social media posts.
So for example, my tone is casual and like I'm talking to a friend. I like to keep it upbeat, so I'm going to use a lot of emojis, you know - because that's fun and I like to be enthusiastic and helpful. Don't be afraid to let your personality shine through. Think about it. Are you funny? Sarcastic? Ambitious? You can convey these brand traits with your voice.
5. Brand Visuals
Now, your visuals. That's your color palette, your font, your aesthetic, and the photography that you use. These pieces need to fit together and form a cohesive impression of your brand. Your visuals are incredibly important because they are an unspoken tool that communicates this overall message about your brand. I've always found that starting out with a general style or mood is the easiest way to get started to discovering your online aesthetic.

6. Be Real
Lastly, be real. It's really not going to work when you're trying to be something other than yourself. Be Yourself. Embrace the quirks that make you, you, and put yourself out there. It's not easy and it will likely be a work in progress, but keep in mind that it can evolve. So just get something out there and start freelancing! After all, as a freelancer, or a coach or an infopreneur, people are working directly with you, therefore, they want to get to know YOU, your story, your personality, and your expertise.
Overall the most important thing to remember when it comes to branding is that every touch point - every email, every phone call, every instagram post that you present forms an impression about what you do and what you value, so make sure you keep it consistent.
